What is a Day Sponsor?
A Day Sponsor is a person or organization that pledges to contribute the cost of one day's operation of Progressive Portal. A one-year pledge of $31.25 per month will fund Progressive Portal for a day. (The cost of one day's operation is $375, or $31.25 x 12.) If sponsoring a full day is too expensive, you may sponsor half a day at $16.23 per month.
How many Day Sponsors are needed, and how many are there now?
Once we have 120 Day Sponsors, w will have enough money to continue at a minimum level. To support the entire site, including adding dozens of new action campaigns and several new action resources, we will need 365 Day Sponsors, one for each day of the year. We currenty have approximately 30 Day Sponsors. The site is also supported by one-time donations (see #2 on donation page), sales of merchandise, and purchases of books from local, independent booksellers.
What does a Day Sponsor get?
In addition to the satisfaction of enabling a day of Progressive Portal activism (in an average day last year, users sent 5,479 letters), each Day Sponsor is listed as Sponsor of the Day near the top-left corner of most pages, on the day sponsored by that person. Each sponsor also is offered a brief description (and photo, if submitted) on our Day Sponsors Page.
What does a Day Sponsor need to submit?
In addition to signing up to contribute the $31.25 monthly pledge (or $15.63 to sponsor half a day), we ask Day Sponsors to provide a sentence or two about them for our Sponsors Page, and a photo if they would like us to publish one (or a logo for an organization).
Why display the name of the Day Sponsor?
We display names of Day Sponsors to: (1) show our appreciation for their support; (2) encourage others to follow their example; (3) illustrate that Progressive Portal is a grassroots effort involving many donors, volunteers, and activists; and (4) expose users to the organizations and causes promoted by our sponsors.
Can I list an organization or another person as the Sponsor of the Day?
If we receive a note directly from that organization or person authorizing us to list them as the sponsor, we will be pleased to do so. Otherwise, we can list you as "A Supporter of [Name of Organization]."
Can I sponsor anonymously?
Certainly. Once you sign up to sponsor, we will write back asking how you would like to be listed. At that point, just tell us you'd like to be anonymous.
Can my name be a link to someone else's Web site?
There are two ways to provide links to others' Web sites. You can list one or two of your favorite sites in your short description on our Sponsors Page. Or, if you sponsor as "A Supporter of [Name of Organization]," those words (instead of your name) will appear on almost every page of Progressive Portal, as a link to that organization's Web site.
Can I select which date(s) I sponsor?
Yes, if nobody else has already chosen those particular dates.
What does the money cover?
The first 120 Day Sponsors will be covering the basic survival of this site and the addition of a few new action campaigns. Sponsors after the first 120 will enable us to dramatically expand the resources available on the site and its effectiveness. The costs of operating Progressive Portal include Web hosting and support, computer software and hardware, telephone and office costs, staff and contractors (including writers and programmers), a small advertising/promotion budget, and legal support (e.g., we've been threatened by targets of our letter-writing campaigns). Because we make maximum use of inexpensive and free support, including a phenomenal cadre of volunteers, our 2002 budget of less than $137,000 is a tiny fraction of most Web sites' budgets.
Is my sponsorship tax deductible?
Federal law allows tax deductions only for donations to organizations that seriously limit their lobbying activities and that do not favor or oppose candidates for office. General contributions to Progressive Portal, including Day Sponsorships, are therefore not tax deductible. However, we are exploring possibilities for creating a separate charitable fund that would support the non-lobbying portions of our activity, so that some donations can be deductible. If you have questions, please inquire.
Can I sponsor more than one day?
Certainly! Simply let us know how many days you'd like to sponsor; we'll set it up!
What if I want to donate more or less than the sponsorship amount, or to pay by check instead of online?
If you wish to make a monthly pledge of a different amount, let us know how much you'd like to contribute each month and we'll set it up. If you wish to make a one-time contribution , you can do so online (see #2 on donation page), or send a check to Progressive Portal, 2512 Telegraph Ave. #274, Berkeley, CA 94704-2918. If you wish to make a monthly pledge by check, enclose a note letting us know you are pledging monthly.
